The loneliness epidemic is on the rise in the USA. And that’s no surprise.

During the COVID years, men – many of whom were already lonely – were pushed further into self-isolation through remote work.

Many are still working remotely.

What we know is that a lack of social interaction has a huge impact on our physical and mental wellbeing.

The nature of my work is such that I spend a lot of time by myself.

So, I figured I’d share just a few of the things that bring me joy. My hope is that sharing some of what I do might inspire you to find activities that bring you joy, too.

1. I cycle. And in Upstate New York during the colder months, I cycle in my basement. Now, you might wonder how it is that riding a bike trainer in the basement elicits joy. Well, it makes me healthy. Plus, I get to watch a lot of great concerts on YouTube! The combo brings me joy, which spills over to my family, too!
2. I play guitar. Sometimes well, sometimes not so much. But I keep playing. I even have a great teacher I meet on Zoom regularly to help me grow as a musician. It’s FUN!
3. I spend time with my wife, Danielle. We’ve been together now for 37 years – and we truly enjoy one another’s company. While we don’t get out as often as we’d like, we do make it a point to do at least one personal development retreat together every year!

These are just some examples of things I enjoy – and that I (imperfectly) make time for.

What brings you joy that you’d like to (imperfectly) make time for?
